THE WHIRL ROASTERY STORY
Tracing its origins back centuries to Ethiopia and continuing through Yemen, coffee’s journey is a storied one. Historical accounts suggest that in the 16th century, Özdemir Pasha, the then Governor of Yemen, introduced coffee to Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire. It was from there that Venetian traders helped spread this beloved beverage across Europe. Coffee’s rise to popularity in Istanbul can be attributed to its positioning as a “Sufi” drink in dervish lodges. It is said that after their day’s work, Sufis would gather together in the evenings to drink coffee, using its energising and satiating effects to support their spiritual practices.
Coffee’s link to Sufism extends beyond tradition; the art of coffee-making and the Sufi’s spiritual path both require perseverance, patience, and care. It is in this spirit that The Whirl brand emerged, honouring the legacy of the Sufis and the coffee that spread from these lands to the world. By selecting the finest beans and employing modern roasting techniques, we ensure each batch is roasted with the utmost care and passion, presenting our consumers with unmatched quality.
Our “Loring Smartroast” coffee roasting machine, handcrafted in Northern California, produces exceptionally clean and delicate flavours, and is recognised as one of the most eco-friendly roasting machines in the world.
Our Chief Roaster, who ranks among the world’s top roasters, infuses each batch of our coffee with love and expertise.
